Archaeology at Birkbeck Faculty Continuing Education Launches Two New Archaeology Summer Schools May to June 2007

Press Release Summary = The school of Archaeology at Birkbeck College (faculty
continuing education) introduces Two New Summer Schools in Revealing Prehistoric
Britain and Revealing Roman Britain.

Tread the trackways of the henge builders and walk in the footsteps of legionaries
in the two archaeology summer schools exploring the Prehistoric and Roman settlement
of Southern Britain through museums, sites and monuments as well as classroom
teaching.


Press Release Body = Birckbeck College Archaeology has introduced 2 new 5 day summer
schools in Revealing Prehistoric Britain and Revealing Roman Britain. Both summer
schools are led by accomplished archaeologists and students will gain knowledge of
sites and their settings, the material culture of the past and the changes in the
landscape over thousands of years. Both summer schools can carry academic credit.

The Revealing Roman Britain 5 day summer school explores the role of Britain in the
Roman Empire through combining visits to monuments and museums in London and the
South-East with classroom lectures and discussions. Students will explore the role
of Britain in the Roman Empire. Plans for the itinerary include study tours of the
Roman Cities of London and Verulamium (St Albans), Fishbourne and Bignor Roman
villas, and the Saxon shore fort at Portchester.

Revealing Roman Britain will be taught by H.L.Sheldon BSc, FSA and Robin Densem BA
and will run from Monday 21st May 2007 until Friday 25th May 2007.

The Revealing Prehistoric 5 day summer school explores the people and places of
prehistory through their artefacts, sites and monuments. Students will examine how
people have domesticated the English landscape as they have moved from hunting and
gathering to farming, from temporary camps to huge monuments such as Avebury and
forts like Maiden caste. The Revealing Prehistoric Britain 5 day summer school uses
a mixture of class teaching visits to museums and monument's to bring an
understanding of a succession of prehistoric lives and societies for students.

Revealing Prehistoric Britain will be taught by J.Scott McCracken, BA, FSA, MIFA and
will run from Monday 28th May 2007 until Friday 1st June 2007.
